Happy New Year! Welcome 2018.

I am ready for the new year and a fresh start. This is a perfect time to set an intention and start the new year off in jubilance.

Many make checklists and catalog New Year’s resolutions. However, I’ve found that tactic does not work well for me. I miss my aim one time and I’m done for. All those good intentions fly right out the window.

Several years ago, I found this process that really does seem to work for me. Instead of making a list of New Year’s Resolutions to reign a fresh start, I have a tradition to decide on a word that will guide my year. In theory, by the end of the year I will have added a new character trait to my life.

This has worked wonders for me in the past. So far I have gained Simplicity (2013), Health (2014), Confidence (2015), Resilience (2016) and Wellness (2017). Now I am ready to add something new...

My goal for 2018 is to be productive and peaceful.

Not too much to request, right? Well, we’ll see. It seems to me that it is easy to say and more difficult to fulfill. However, my word, achievement, will help guide my way.

Achievement means “something accomplished, especially by superior ability, special effort, great courage, etc.” As a verb, achieve means “to bring to a successful end; carry through; accomplish.”

What I need is to finish what I start and follow through on my intentions.

I almost chose “Finish” as my word because it would add the idea of using up resources and to put on the final touches. However, I need the ambition that achievement brings: to accomplish with great effort and courage. I will need both of those things on my journey this year as I continue to write and publish.

My goals this year include launching this blog, making great strides towards publishing my first novel and living an active, healthy lifestyle that energizes and nurtures me. I will need both great effort and courage to accomplish this ambition.

However, I am not trying to reach a target objective as much as I am cultivating a lifestyle. One that will set my intentions in motion and help me stay balanced along the way.

Achievement will guide me to finish what I begin and live in peace along the way. I am excited for the journey that 2018 will provide.
