Defining Success

In order to be successful, you have to have a clear definition of success.

Success is a noun that has three meanings:
  1. The favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors; the accomplishment of one's goals.
  2. The attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like.
  3. A performance or achievement that is marked by success, as by the attainment of honors.

You can be successful by accomplishing a goal, attaining assets, or achieving recognition. The interesting thing is, as unique individuals, we strive for different things and lean towards different definitions of success.

You can't judge your success on someone else's definition. You must choose your own.

For example, I want to accomplish my goal of publishing a book. I do not need to attain any assets or achieve recognition for this project to be successful in my eyes. I simply need to finish it to prove to myself I can.

It is okay if you need to gain an assets or achieve recognition to feel accomplished, you just have to clear a path towards that direction and follow through on your practice. By recognizing how you view success, you can make small goals that create a process, creating momentum for your work. The process is success in itself because you can consistently move towards accomplishing your goals. It will also help you appreciate the milestone moments as you reach them and push past them.

Have an inspired day!

  1. Amanda, thank you for this post and this message! It is exactly what I am needing. I have been toying with the idea of compiling the stories of my mental health journey into book format. But yet I keep letting fear hold me back. And lately I have been using lack of time as my excuse. The more I read posts like this, the more I get inspired to push past my own excuses and get to work. I hope your work is going well and it is nice to hear from you!

  2. I love the idea of you compiling your journey into a book. I've really enjoying reading your blog posts, it would make a great story to share in book form. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. It is hard to get going sometimes, and even harder to stay going, but if you do, it's so worth it. (This is what I keep telling myself at least.)

  3. The older I get, the more I see success as being happy and content. I think people spend a lot of time striving for the wrong things and that's why when they get them, they aren't fulfilled...

    1. Yes, I agree. I had a sit down with myself to figure out my own definition of success and it really changed my perspective. Thanks for stopping by and sharing! Have a great week :)

I love to hear what inspires you. I appreciate feedback to help grow as an artist, I ask only that you stay positive even if being critical. Thank you Writing Companion!
